Becoming Panamanian: naturalization after five years of residence (three with a Panamanian spouse or child), the qualified investor path and the 2026 electronic procedure
Last verified: 2026-10-29 · Status: Changing
Under Constitution art. 10, adult foreigners may seek Panamanian nationality after five consecutive years of residence, or three years if they have Panamanian born children or a Panamanian spouse, provided they declare the wish to naturalize, expressly renounce their nationality of origin and show Spanish and basic knowledge of Panamanian geography, history and political organization. Nationals by birth of Spain or a Latin American state may naturalize on the same terms their country applies to Panamanians. Qualified investors and their dependents may apply after five consecutive years, and in September 2026 the Servicio Nacional de Migración adopted an electronic naturalization procedure.
Panama's currency, the balboa (B/.), is at par with the US dollar, which circulates as legal tender; the Superintendencia de Bancos states that the balboa's value is on a par with the US dollar (checked 29 October 2026). USD figures therefore equal the balboa figures.

Worked example
- An investor who obtained qualified investor residence in October 2026 and keeps the investment can apply for naturalization from October 2031, after five consecutive years.
- A foreign manager married to a Panamanian can apply after three consecutive years of residence, subject to renouncing the nationality of origin.
Step by step
- Count consecutive years from the residence grant and keep records of time in Panama.
- Check the effect of the required renunciation under your home country's law before applying.
- Prepare for the Spanish and civics requirements.
- File through the procedure of the Servicio Nacional de Migración, now electronic under Resolución 51973 de 2026; qualified investors file at the Ministerio de Comercio e Industrias window.
Common traps
- Express renunciation of the nationality of origin is a constitutional requirement; reciprocity rules for Spanish and Latin American nationals turn on what their own countries require.
- Years must be consecutive; long absences can break residence.
- The State may refuse naturalization for morality, security, health or capacity reasons.
