Digital nomad visa and residence

Last verified: 2026-10-27 · Status: Stable

A foreigner who works remotely for a foreign employer can live in Brazil for up to 1 year, renewable once for 1 more, by showing foreign income of at least US$1,500 a month or US$18,000 in the bank. The route excludes anyone working for a Brazilian employer or covered by another work route. It can be requested at a consulate as a visa or in Brazil as residence.

USD figures use the Banco Central do Brasil PTAX selling rate of R$5.3346 per US dollar for 27 October 2026. The rate moved sharply in late October 2026 (R$5.0377 on 23 October, R$5.5007 on 26 October), so treat conversions as orientation only.

The rule

1. A digital nomad is an immigrant able to perform work remotely in Brazil for a foreign employer using information and communication technology. Anyone working for an employer in Brazil, with or without employment, or whose labor residence is governed by another rule, is not a digital nomad. The same activities may also be done as a visitor, within the visit rules for the nationality.Resolução CNIG MJSP nº 45 of 9 September 2021 (DOU of 24 January 2022), Res. nº 45 arts. 1 §§ 1 and 2 and 2, 2021-09-09 official text · verified 2026-10-27
2. At the consulate the applicant presents a valid travel document, health insurance valid in Brazil, the paid consular fee, the visa form, proof of transport to Brazil, a criminal record certificate from the country of origin or equivalent, and proof of digital nomad status. The initial residence is up to 1 year.

4. Proof of nomad status is a declaration of ability to work remotely, the employment or services contract or other proof of the tie to the foreign employer, and means of support from a foreign payer of at least US$1,500 a month or available bank funds of at least US$18,000.
Example: US$1,500 a month is about R$8,001.90; US$18,000 is about R$96,022.80 at PTAX R$5.3346. / US$1,500 a month or US$18,000 in funds.Resolução CNIG MJSP nº 45 of 9 September 2021, Res. nº 45 art. 5, 2021-09-09 official text · verified 2026-10-27
5. Residence may be renewed once for the same period with the paid fee, the no conviction declaration, renewed proof of nomad status, a copy of the migration card and criminal records from where the person lived. Omitted or false information leads to cancellation.Resolução CNIG MJSP nº 45 of 9 September 2021, Res. nº 45 arts. 6 and 7, 2021-09-09 official text · verified 2026-10-27

Worked example

  • A software developer employed by a Canadian company earns US$6,000 a month and wants to spend a year in Florianópolis. The income clears the US$1,500 floor (about R$8,001.90). Applying in Brazil costs R$168.13 plus R$204.77 (about US$69.90). Income tax residence follows the tax rules, not the visa, so check the taxes section before relying on foreign payroll.

Step by step

  1. 1. Confirm the employer or clients are foreign and no Brazilian entity pays the work.
  2. 2. Gather the employment or services contract, payslips or bank statements, health insurance and criminal records.
  3. 3. Apply at the consulate for the visa, or in Brazil to the Ministry of Justice after paying the processing fee.
  4. 4. Register with the Federal Police within 90 days of entry (or 30 days of approval in Brazil).
  5. 5. Before the year ends, file the single renewal with updated proof.

Common traps

  • Taking Brazilian clients. Working for an employer in Brazil takes the person out of the route (Res. nº 45 art. 1 § 2).
  • Only one renewal. After 2 years in total the person needs another basis (Res. nº 45 art. 6).
  • Tax residence is separate. Migration status does not decide income tax residence; check the taxes section.
