Unrealized exchange gains and losses on foreign currency balances count for income tax at year end. DGII publishes the rate for each fiscal closing, and in the 2025 and 2026 closings checked it matches the Banco Central reference buying rate on the closing date. Official books stay in pesos.

USD figures use the Banco Central de la República Dominicana reference selling rate of RD$60.9007 per US dollar for 29 October 2026, as shown on its home page on the verification date, rounded to the cent.

DGII closing rates for art. 293

Worked example

  • A company closing on 30 June owes US$1,000,000. At the 30 June 2025 rate the debt is RD$59,237,600, and at the 30 June 2026 rate RD$59,268,400. The RD$30,800 increase (about US$505.74) is a deductible loss. A company holding the same amount in dollars has RD$30,800 of taxable income.

Step by step

  1. Find the resolution for your closing date on the DGII site.
  2. List every foreign currency asset and liability.
  3. Post the adjustment to Resultado Cambiario.
  4. Exclude items that already carry an exchange adjustment.

Common traps

  • The gain or loss is taxed before any cash moves, so a dollar borrower with peso income can show a large swing in a volatile year. In 2026 the rate has moved by over RD$5 between its high and low.
  • Use the DGII rate for art. 293, even if your bank dealt at a different rate during the year.
  • Reading art. 293 together with the thin capitalization limit: exchange losses are not interest, but the loan behind them still counts in the 3 to 1 test.
  • No amendment to art. 293 was found in the Ley 30-26 text, whose OCR layer was searched. The compiled Title II predates that law.
