Worked example

  • A company holds RD$3,000,000 (US$49,260.52) in a failed bank. At most RD$1,860,000 (US$30,541.52) is covered, leaving RD$1,140,000 (US$18,719.00) to be claimed in the process, and even the covered sum is subject to the 30% limit on privileged obligations.
  • A bank with RD$10,000,000,000 (US$164,201,725.10) of public funding pays at least RD$10,000,000 (US$164,201.73) a year, or RD$2,500,000 (US$41,050.43) a quarter.

Step by step

  1. Check that the institution is an authorized entity on the Superintendencia list.
  2. Split large balances across entities if guarantee cover matters to the treasury policy.
  3. Keep account activity alive to avoid abandonment.
  4. In a failure, follow the Banco Central and Superintendencia notices under art. 63.

Common traps

  • The 2003 fund regulation on the Superintendencia site still shows RD$500,000. The annotated law text shows RD$1,860,000. No later update was found on verification, and the fund regulation provides for indexation, so confirm the current figure.
  • The guarantee is not a free standing right to payment: there is no route outside art. 63.
  • The fund regulation applies the limit per depositor, so a corporate treasury balance above the limit is not fully protected.
