Overstays, deportation and expulsion in the Dominican Republic

Last verified: 2026-10-30 · Status: Stable

Staying past the allowed date costs a fee at exit from RD$3,500 up to RD$98,000, and paying it gives no right to stay. Overstaying is also a ground for deportation, and a deported person cannot come back without authorization. Expulsion is the heavier measure for security or criminal cases.

USD figures use the Banco Central de la República Dominicana reference selling rate of RD$60.9007 per US dollar for 29 October 2026, as shown on its home page on the verification date, rounded to the cent.

DGM stay charge table. Applies by length of stay, for all nationalities.

Worked example

  • Tourist arrives on 1 March and leaves on 15 May, 75 days in the country: RD$3,500 (US$57.47).
  • A person who stayed four years pays RD$22,400 (US$367.81) or RD$28,000 (US$459.76) depending on the exact band, and remains exposed to deportation.

Step by step

  1. Count days from the entry date.
  2. Request an extension online before day 30 if you know you will stay.
  3. Pay the stay charge online or at the airport by card or transfer, on the exit date.
  4. Keep the receipt.
  5. If a measure is notified, instruct a lawyer at once.

Common traps

  • The table starts at 30 days in the country and goes by total stay, not extra days, so the first day over triggers the first band.
  • Bands overlap at their edges and the table has no line for 5 years, which an older list had. Ask for the amount before you travel.
  • An older DGM PDF still shows RD$2,500 for the first band. The RD$3,500 table is the later one.
  • The tariff text itself, Resolución DGM-006-2023 of 15 November 2023, could not be opened, so amounts come from DGM sheets and replies.
  • Law art. 121 lists expulsion at numeral 5 inside the deportation article, so the labels overlap.
  • Paying at the airport does not cure illegal work.
