Remote workers in the Dominican Republic: no digital nomad visa yet

Last verified: 2026-10-30 · Status: Changing

No visa or residence category for digital nomads appears in the migration law or on the foreign ministry's visa list. A remote worker staying long term has to fit an existing route such as RT-9 or the rentier path. Short stays rest on the tourist rules, which bar gainful activity in the country.

USD figures use the Banco Central de la República Dominicana reference selling rate of RD$60.9007 per US dollar for 29 October 2026, as shown on its home page on the verification date, rounded to the cent.

Worked example

  • A designer paid from abroad who wants a year in Santo Domingo cannot use the rentier route on salary. RT-9 is the usual fit, at about US$533 in government fees, as the fees page sets out.

Step by step

  1. Decide how long you will stay.
  2. Under 30 days, follow the visitor rules and take advice on any work done.
  3. For longer, use RT-9 or a route you qualify for.
  4. Check tax residence.

Common traps

  • The Dominican rules do not state whether work for a foreign employer done from a laptop counts as gainful activity in the country. Art. 100 is broad, so take advice.
  • Private sites advertise a Dominican nomad visa. No official source shows one on 30 October 2026, and any bill reported in the press was not found in official text.
  • Hiring local people or billing local clients moves the case into work rules at once.
