Keeping a Peruvian residence status: extensions, carné renewals, travel and absence permits, and migration fines

Last verified: 2026-10-28 · Status: Stable

Residence in Peru must be actively kept: worker, investor and family statuses are extended every year (S/ 20.20), the carné de extranjería is renewed every four or five years, data changes must be reported, and residents cannot be abroad more than 183 consecutive days in 365 without authorization. Fines are a share of the UIT: 0.1 percent a day for overstays, 1 percent a day for late extensions (S/ 55 a day in 2026) and 10 percent for activities outside the status. Serious breaches lead to mandatory departure with re entry bans of up to five years or expulsion with up to fifteen.

USD figures use S/ 3.452 per US dollar, the banking system selling rate published by the Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP for 27 October 2026, from the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú statistics series PD04640PD. Conversions are for orientation only.

The rule

1. Foreigners must show their identity or travel document proving their migration situation when required by Migraciones, the police or other authorities; enter and leave only through authorized control posts; keep their migration situation regular and pay the applicable fees on time; provide Migraciones the information needed to keep the Registro de Información Migratoria current; and carry out only the activities authorized by their visa or status. Extensions of residence are granted only if these duties are met or any fine has been paid.Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350, Decreto Legislativo de Migraciones, as amended by Decreto Legislativo Nº 1582; Texto Único de Procedimientos Administrativos (TUPA) de la Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones, as modified by Resolución de Superintendencia Nº 000150-2025-MIGRACIONES, DL 1350 art. 10 (as quoted in TUPA procedures PA350026DC and PA35004A5A), 2025-12-12 official text · verified 2026-10-28
2. Migraciones can impose fines, mandatory departure with a ban on re entry of up to five years, and expulsion with a ban of up to fifteen years. Fines are set in the regulation on the basis of the UIT and do not accrue interest. Automatic fines apply for overstaying (charged on departure) and for using a different nationality from the one used on entry; calculated fines apply for failing to update the carné de extranjería, overstaying when applying to regularize, and carrying out activities not matching the status.Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350, Decreto Legislativo de Migraciones, as amended by Decreto Legislativo Nº 1582, Art. 54 and 56, 2023-11-14 official text · verified 2026-10-28
3. Fine amounts: overstay on departure 0.1 percent of the UIT per day; using more than one nationality 5 percent of the UIT; not updating the carné de extranjería 1 percent of the UIT per month; activities not matching the status 10 percent of the UIT. The UIT in force on the date of the infraction applies, and once the fine is paid the foreigner can start the procedure to regularize.
Cost to do it: At the 2026 UIT of S/ 5,500: overstay S/ 5.50 (about US$1.59) a day; carné not updated S/ 55.00 (about US$15.93) a month; wrong activity S/ 550.00 (about US$159.33); dual nationality use S/ 275.00 (about US$79.66).
Example: A visitor who overstays 40 days pays 40 x S/ 5.50 = S/ 220.00 on departure. / About US$63.73 for the 40 day overstay.Reglamento del Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350, approved by Decreto Supremo Nº 007-2017-IN, Art. 188.2, 188.3 and 190 a), b), c) and e), 2017-03-27 official text · verified 2026-10-28
4. Failing to request the extension of a resident status within its validity (except for indefinite statuses) is fined at 1 percent of the UIT for each day of delay.
Cost to do it: S/ 55.00 (about US$15.93) per day in 2026.
Example: A worker who files the extension 20 days after the status expired pays 20 x S/ 55.00 = S/ 1,100.00 before the extension is processed. / About US$318.66.Decreto Supremo Nº 002-2021-IN, amending the Reglamento del Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350 and the Reglamento de la Ley Nº 26574, Reglamento art. 190 d) (as amended by DS 002-2021-IN), 2021-03-24 official text · verified 2026-10-28
5. A resident (other than a permanent resident) loses the status if abroad more than 183 consecutive days in a 365 day period counted from the first departure during the residence, unless an absence authorization was obtained; for treaty statuses and family of Peruvians the 183 days are counted within the residence period granted. Migraciones can authorize an absence of up to 183 consecutive days for emergency or force majeure, requested before the limit is reached. A foreigner with a change or extension of status in progress needs a 30 day travel authorization for each trip abroad, requested before leaving.
Cost to do it: Absence authorization (residents) S/ 30.20 (about US$8.75); 30 day travel authorization while a procedure is pending S/ 35.00 (about US$10.14), decided in 7 business days with positive silence.Decreto Supremo Nº 002-2021-IN, amending the Reglamento del Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350 and the Reglamento de la Ley Nº 26574; Texto Único de Procedimientos Administrativos (TUPA) de la Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones, as modified by Resolución de Superintendencia Nº 000150-2025-MIGRACIONES, Reglamento art. 63 a) and 67.2 (as amended by DS 002-2021-IN); TUPA procedures PA3500425B and PA35008202, 2021-03-24 official text · verified 2026-10-28
6. Residence cards: the carné de extranjería is valid four years for residents, five for permanent residents and three for minors; renewal is decided within 3 business days. A foreigner can also ask Migraciones to cancel their status before leaving Peru for good, for which Migraciones issues an exit order.
Cost to do it: Renewal S/ 22.10 (about US$6.40); cancellation on request S/ 6.80 (about US$1.97).Texto Único de Procedimientos Administrativos (TUPA) de la Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones, as modified by Resolución de Superintendencia Nº 000150-2025-MIGRACIONES, Services SE350098D6 (Renovación de carné de extranjería) and SE3500DF5B (Cancelación de la calidad migratoria a solicitud de parte), 2025-12-12 official text · verified 2026-10-28
7. Migraciones may waive fines imposed on foreigners or nationals who prove a condition of vulnerability that makes payment impossible; the waiver does not apply to transport companies, port and airport operators or lodging businesses.Reglamento del Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350, approved by Decreto Supremo Nº 007-2017-IN, Art. 194, 2017-03-27 official text · verified 2026-10-28

Routine fees for residents (TUPA Migraciones as modified by RS 000150-2025-MIGRACIONES)

Worked example

  • A Trabajador resident's status expires on 31 March. The renewal is filed on 20 April, 20 days late.
  • Fine: 20 x 1 percent of S/ 5,500 = S/ 1,100.00 (about US$318.66), payable before the S/ 20.20 extension is processed. Filing on time would have cost only the fee.
  • Separately, the resident had moved apartments in January without updating the carné data; three months unreported adds 3 x S/ 55.00 = S/ 165.00 (about US$47.80).
  • Total avoidable cost: S/ 1,265.00, about US$366.45, compared with S/ 20.20 for a timely extension.

Step by step

  1. Keep a register of each foreign employee's status, expiry date and carné expiry; diary the extension at least a month before.
  2. Update address and personal data with Migraciones whenever they change.
  3. Before any trip abroad while a change or extension is pending, request the 30 day travel authorization.
  4. For long assignments abroad, request the absence authorization before the 183rd (or, for permanent residents, the 365th) consecutive day.
  5. On final departure, request cancellation of the status so the record is closed.

Common traps

  • The late extension fine (1 percent of the UIT a day) is ten times the overstay fine; a month's delay costs S/ 1,650 in 2026.
  • Each trip abroad while a change or extension is pending needs its own 30 day travel authorization, requested before leaving (Reglamento art. 67.2.1; TUPA PA35008202).
  • Fines use the UIT in force on the date of the infraction, which rises most years.
  • An extension is refused while any fine is unpaid; pay first, then file.
