Retiree and passive income residence in Peru: the Rentista status and its US$1,000 a month test

Last verified: 2026-10-28 · Status: Stable

Retirees and people living on permanent income can live in Peru on the Rentista status: an indefinite residence that needs proof of at least US$1,000 a month net from abroad paid into Peru through an SBS supervised bank. It costs S/ 58.80 from abroad (S/ 161.40 if switching inside Peru), is never renewed, and only the carné de extranjería is renewed every four years. Spending more than 183 days a year in Peru also makes the holder tax domiciled on worldwide income from the next year.

USD figures use S/ 3.452 per US dollar, the banking system selling rate published by the Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP for 27 October 2026, from the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú statistics series PD04640PD. Conversions are for orientation only.

The rule

1. The Rentista resident status allows residence for a foreigner who receives a retirement pension or permanent income from Peruvian or foreign sources. The income amount and other conditions are set by the regulation, and the stay is indefinite.Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350, Decreto Legislativo de Migraciones, as amended by Decreto Legislativo Nº 1582, Art. 29.2 n, 2023-11-14 official text · verified 2026-10-28
2. The regulation requires proof of a life pension (pensión vitalicia) from Peruvian or foreign sources, with the amount set by an administrative act of Migraciones, and grants the status for an indefinite term. The application is decided within 30 business days, with negative silence, and the applicant must be outside Peru.Reglamento del Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350, approved by Decreto Supremo Nº 007-2017-IN; Decreto Supremo Nº 002-2021-IN, amending the Reglamento del Decreto Legislativo Nº 1350 and the Reglamento de la Ley Nº 26574, Reglamento art. 92.1 to 92.3; art. 92-A (added by DS 002-2021-IN), 2021-03-24 official text · verified 2026-10-28
3. For income from abroad, the applicant shows a document from the paying country proving a permanent net income of at least US$1,000 a month, and a sworn statement that the money enters Peru through a bank or financial entity supervised by the Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP. For Peruvian source income, a copy of the document proving the permanent monthly income. Five year record certificates and passport complete the file. The status is not renewable because it is indefinite; the carné de extranjería still has to be renewed.
Cost to do it: Migraciones fee S/ 58.80 (about US$17.03) from abroad; carné de extranjería S/ 24.00 (about US$6.95).

Worked example

  • A Canadian retiree with a public pension of US$1,800 a month and an investment income stream decides to live in Arequipa.
  • The retiree gets a pension certificate from the Canadian payer, apostilles it with a sworn Spanish translation, and signs a sworn statement that the pension will be paid into a Peruvian bank supervised by the SBS.
  • From Canada, the retiree applies for Rentista (S/ 58.80, about US$17.03); after the visa is issued and the retiree enters, the carné de extranjería costs S/ 24.00 (about US$6.95) and is renewed every four years for S/ 22.10.
  • Tax: once the retiree has spent more than 183 days in Peru in a 12 month period, Peru treats the retiree as domiciled from the following 1 January and taxes worldwide income, subject to any applicable treaty (see immigration/tax-residence-for-foreigners and taxes/tax-treaties).

Step by step

  1. Obtain an official statement from the pension or income payer showing a net monthly amount of at least US$1,000.
  2. Open or designate a Peruvian bank account at an SBS supervised entity to receive the income.
  3. Collect the five year record certificates; apostille and translate all foreign documents.
  4. Apply from abroad for Rentista; allow 30 business days and the consular visa step.
  5. On arrival, obtain the carné de extranjería and diary its renewal four years later.

Common traps

  • The US$1,000 is a net monthly figure; gross pension statements that fall below it after deductions do not qualify.
  • The income must flow into Peru through an SBS supervised bank; income kept abroad does not match the sworn statement the file requires.
  • Long absences end residence: more than 183 consecutive days abroad in a 365 day period without an absence authorization causes loss of the status (DS 007-2017-IN art. 63 a as amended by DS 002-2021-IN).
  • Becoming tax domiciled brings worldwide income into Peruvian tax; plan the move date around the 183 day test and the 1 January effect.
  • Naturalization later needs proof of gross annual income of at least 10 UIT (S/ 55,000 in 2026); a pension of exactly US$1,000 a month is about S/ 41,424 a year, below that line.
