The 0.2% tax on checks and transfers

Last verified: 2026-10-30 · Status: Changing

Abroad a bank payment carries no tax; here each check and each electronic transfer payment pays 0.2%. Ley 30-26 raised the rate from 0.15% from 3 July 2026, and transfers between accounts of the same person are excluded. Card purchases, cash withdrawals, social security and tax payments are also out, so payment routing affects cost.

USD figures use the Banco Central de la República Dominicana reference selling rate of RD$60.9007 per US dollar for 29 October 2026, the latest row in its published rate file on the verification date, rounded to the cent.

The rule

1. A tax of 0.002 (2.0 per thousand) applies to the value of each check paid by financial intermediaries and to payments by electronic transfer. Transfers to a third party account at the same bank carry the same rate.
Cost to do it: 0.2% of each covered payment.

Worked example

  • A company pays RD$10,000,000 (US$164,201.73) a month to suppliers. It pays RD$20,000 (US$328.40) a month, or RD$240,000 (US$3,940.84) a year, against RD$180,000 (US$2,955.63) at the old rate of 0.15%.

Step by step

  1. Map payments by type.
  2. Use same owner transfers where they fit the exclusion.
  3. Budget 0.2% on supplier and payroll runs.
  4. Check the bank statement line against the amount.

Common traps

  • Transfers between group companies are between different persons, so the exclusion does not apply.
  • Paying a supplier in cash to save 0.2% can cost 27% of the amount if the payment is above RD$50,000.
  • A DGII page on selective taxes showed the old rate when the tax section was checked, so rely on the law.
