The asset tax is an annual 1% on the balance sheet assets of companies and sole proprietors, working as a minimum tax because income tax paid is credited against it. Banks, power companies and some financial entities pay only on fixed assets, and agricultural companies are now exempt. DGII still collects it, even though the compiled code carries a note on a conditional phase out.

USD figures use the Banco Central de la República Dominicana reference selling rate of RD$60.8594 per US dollar for 28 October 2026, the latest row in its published rate file on the verification date, rounded to the cent.

The rule

1. The tax applies each year to the assets of legal persons and individuals with sole proprietorships. DGII states the rate is 1% of total taxable assets.

4. The asset tax is declared in the income tax return and paid in two equal installments, the first on the income tax date and the second six months later. For a December close in 2026, DGII lists 30 April and 30 October.Ley 11-92, Código Tributario and DGII income tax page, art. 405, 1992-05-16 official text · verified 2026-10-30
5. The amount is a credit against income tax. If income tax equals or exceeds it, the asset tax is treated as paid. If it is higher, the difference is paid in the two installments.Ley 11-92, Código Tributario, art. 407, 1992-05-16 official text · verified 2026-10-30

How the credit works

Worked example

  • A startup with taxable assets of RD$20,000,000 (about US$328,626.31) and a loss pays RD$200,000 (about US$3,286.26) of asset tax, half with the return and half six months later, unless DGII grants the loss exemption.

Step by step

  1. Compute taxable assets from the closing balance sheet.
  2. Strip out shares, rural land and advance payments.
  3. File in the IR-2 and offset any income tax.
  4. If a loss year applies, request the exemption with support before the due date.
  5. For a new capital intensive project, apply at least three months before the return date.

Common traps

  • The compiled code carries a note on art. 48 of Ley 253-12, which set a reduction and elimination subject to a tax pressure target. DGII publishes 1% as current, so budget for it.
  • Advance payments can offset the asset tax if the year ends with an excess (art. 314).
  • A loss year does not by itself remove the tax. It only allows a request, which DGII decides.
